Doctor's Bio
When choosing a hair restoration physician, it is important to make an informed choice. This involves knowing the qualifications, training, and experience of your physician. Many offices offering hair transplantation have doctors on staff who, though able to perform the procedure, do not have the skill and training of a surgeon.
John P. Schwinning MD, FACS, PC
Dr. Schwinning, formerly a board certified general and vascular surgeon, now specializes exclusively in hair transplant restoration surgery. After having the procedure performed on himself, he has since been passionately devoted to advancing the art of hair restoration. With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Schwinning has performed more than 10,000 procedures and is among the world’s most skilled hair transplant surgeons.
A frequent presenter at hair loss seminars, he continually keeps abreast of the latest developments in hair restoration. He is also a contributing writer to Hair Forum, the leading medical journal on the improvement of hair restoration surgery, and has been on many expert panels in hair conferences around the world. Dr. Schwinning is also a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. After graduating from medical school in 1976, Schwinning completed his five-year general surgical residency at the Staten Island University Hospital and did his fellowship in vascular surgery at the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn. Following his residency, he entered into private practice for general vascular surgery in both New York and New Jersey and taught at the State Island University Hospital.
In 1988, interested in hair loss procedures, Dr. Schwinning began attending lectures and training seminars conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and the American Hair Loss Council. Upon being awarded membership into these organizations, Dr. Schwinning began working with physicians who specialized in hair transplant procedures.
With his surgical skill and medical background, Dr. Schwinning refined many hair transplant techniques, including a scalp reduction procedure, which prevented a common stretch back problem and the linear graft, a major breakthrough in hair transplant surgery at the time. Today, with the advent of follicular units, procedures like scalp reductions are no longer common and aren't performed at IHSG but Dr. Schwinning continues to improve upon modern techniques, employing the latest breakthroughs in the field.
