Hair Loss from Trauma

While most often unexpected, hair loss due to trauma caused by accidents, operations, or other unplanned events is not uncommon. Unlike genetic hair loss, those who suffer from traumatic hair loss are often completely unprepared. Fortunately, for such cases donor supply is usually not a concern, making such surgeries very successful.

One of the most common types of hair loss trauma is that due to cosmetic surgeries such as face or brow lifts. In such cases several factors must be evaluated including scar density, hair direction, and future facial procedures. Because scar tissue has decreased blood supply, it limits how densely grafts can be placed together within a given session. A second factor for consideration is the hair direction. Face and brow lifts can alter the original hair direction along the hair line, in which case hairs transplanted must blend with the surrounding area to produce a natural looking transplant. Future procedures must also be taken into consideration as hair placement may interfere with subsequent procedures.
