A Guide to Hair Restoration
With an endless number of websites about hair transplantation on the web, it can be difficult to know what to look for and what information to trust. Whether you decide to undergo your procedure at IHSG or another hair clinic, the following will provide some helpful tips to follow and questions to ask when trying to find a hair transplant surgeon that’s right for you.
It's also very important to know how much work experience the doctor has. Is the practice dedicated solely to hair restoration surgery, if not, how much of hair restoration surgery represents his/her business? For a doctor to be proficient at hair transplants, he/she should be peforming the procedure, at the very least, on a weekly basis.
Take note of what professional memberships the doctor has. Though a professional membership in organizations like ISHRS and the ESHR does not guarantee the qualifications of the doctor, it does illustrate an effort to stay current on the latest techniques and improvements in hair restoration.
Tip 1: Know the qualifications of your doctor.
Although considered a surgical procedure, hair transplant surgery does not require specific training. Any general practitioner can perform hair transplantation, so it’s important to know how much experience and what credentials the doctor has. Hair restoration doctors with the letters FACS (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after their name mean that his/her education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.
Tip 2: Look for a recommendation.
The best way to find a hair transplant surgeon or clinic is through a personal recommendation. It will give you an opportunity to hear first hand what the experience was like, how the doctor and staff performed, and most importantly, see the results for yourself. Of course, not everyone will be willing to share their experiences. Hair loss can be a very private matter for some. Nevertheless you can and should ask for recent references from the clinic. Though you are unlikely to hear a negative reference this way, it will give you an opportunity to speak with someone who has experienced the facilities in question.
Tip 3: Know how long the physician/clinic has been practicing.
A poorly skilled physician or an unreputable clinic can't stay in business in the long run. Look to established businesses and experienced surgeons. Though a physician just starting out may be more inexpensive, you'll often end up getting what you paid for.
Tip 4: Pay attention to details.
Is the clinic clean and up kept? Did you meet with the doctor and did he/she take the time to explain and answer all of your questions? The way a clinic is run and how much the doctor involves him/herself is a good indication of how they treat hair transplantation surgery. You should be wary of offices that seem run down or disorganized or don't require the ongoing presence of a doctor.
Tip 5: Take your time.
Deciding to undergo hair transplant surgery is a major decision and should be thought through. A clinic that pressures you to make a decision may not be as concerned about you as you would like. So take all the time you need and look at other clinics.
Tip 6: Be clear about the cost.
At IHSG we charge the patient by procedure and there is no hidden cost or unexpected additional charges, but this isn't the case everywhere. Know what you will be getting and if there is a chance that the price may change. Never make a quick decision on the cost of the procedure, if a clinic claims to be able to do more, for an additional cost and only lets you know this minutes before the procedure, they may be trying to take advantage of you.
While the information in this guide does not cover everything, it will give you a good start to finding the hair restoration clinic that's right for you. If you have any tips you would like to add to help others, please feel free to email:info@hairsurgical.com.
