Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation, also referred to as hair restoration surgery, hair transplants, and hair replacement is the transplanting of grafts from the back area of the scalp to another region affected by hair loss, which includes not only typical balding areas like the crown and temporal regions, but also areas on the face like eyebrows, sideburns, and beard.

Unlike the frontal, temporal and crown areas, the hair around the side and back of the head, known as the donor area, are genetically resilient to hair loss. During hair transplant surgery, a section of tissue is taken from the donor area and dissected under high-powered microscopes into natural, individual and paired follicular units. These carefully dissected units are then placed into small incisions made in the designated bald or thinning area, known as the recipient site.

All hair restoration surgery involves the transplantation of your own hair, therefore candidates for hair transplantation must have an adequate donor area. Candidates must also be checked for uncontrolled high blood pressure and blood clotting problems, as these conditions can affect the candidacy of the patient.

To create a natural-looking hair line or fill in areas on the face such as eyebrows and side-burns requires great skill on the part of the doctor and technicians. The technicians must be highly trained to cut with precision each graft under binocular-stereoscopic microscopes and the doctor must have a tremendous sense of artistry to recreate a hair line that is both natural and undetectable.

All restoration procedures are done using high-power, binocular-stereoscopic magnification and the exclusive use of follicular units, which translates into a fuller hairline without sacrificing your natural appearance.

Today, hair loss of the head is just one among the many areas that can be restored; scars of the scalp, thinning eyebrows, and uneven sideburns can all be surgically improved.

The History of Hair Restoration Surgery

While hair restoration surgery techniques have seen vast improvements in the last ten years, the procedure itself goes back as early as the 1930’s, with its origins in Japan, decades before its introduction into western society. The onset of World War II resulted in the long delay of recognition of reported work of Japanese physicians and it wasn’t until the 1950’s that America saw its first successful hair transplant procedure.

The first 25 years of hair transplantation seem to forever live in the minds of those uninformed about current hair restoration practices. Years ago, the standard procedure required the removal of 3-4 mm round punches. These large dense grafts, when transplanted to a bald or thinning area, resulted in the plug-like, doll appearance that many have in their minds when they think of hair transplants today.

In the early 1980’s, hair restoration specialists began utilizing mini and micro grafts to create a softer hair line. Despite the improvements, however, such grafts can still produce a “pluggy” transplant. And while some transplant physicians still utilize this method of treatment, it has been eclipsed by the advent of follicular unit grafting.

Follicular unit grafts are naturally occurring groupings of hair follicles in one, two, and three hair combinations. When transplanted, these grafts produce a more natural, denser result as well as reduce recovery times.

Today, with an experienced hair transplant surgeon, hair restoration surgery is virtually undetectable. Utilizing follicular unit grafts, we can recreate a hair line that is both natural looking and full, giving patients a more youthful appearance.
